The ruins recently discovered in southern Peru, according to the cautious statements of experts, may turn out to be an ancient "lost city"." Paititi, according to National Geographic.

The alleged lost city, described as a stone settlement decorated with golden statues, has been a holy grail for explorers and a lure for the local tourism business for many years.

A well-known legend has it that Paititi was built by the Inca hero Inkarri, who founded the city of Cuzco before he had to retreat deep into the jungle under the onslaught of the arriving Spanish conquistadors.

On January 10, the Peruvian state news agency announced the discovery of an "archaeological fortress" in the Kimbiri district, whose mayor suggests that it is a lost city. Mayor Guillermo Torres describes the ruins as a fortification covering 40,000 square meters, located near a place known as Lobo Tauantinsuyo.

The details are still unknown, but the first reports mention carefully crafted stone structures forming the base of the fortification walls.

State media quoted Torres as saying that the area would be immediately declared a cultural monument and a tourist attraction.

Representatives of the National Institute of Culture (INC) of the Peruvian government, after meeting with Torres, said it was too early to draw any conclusions. "We are going to send a group of researchers there," said Francisco Solis, an employee of INC.

It is believed that Paititi was located somewhere east of the Andes in the rainforests of southeastern Peru, southwestern Brazil or northern Bolivia. According to archival records discovered by Italian archaeologists in 2001, missionaries in 1600 reported a large "golden city" located in the place where Paititi was supposedly located. However, according to Solis, the location of the newly found walls does not correspond to the place indicated in the historical records. Nevertheless, the officials are intrigued by the possibilities.

In their opinion, at the moment it is necessary to determine whether the ruins found were built by the Incas or whether they were built by other ethnic groups before them. Experts note that although the ruins were not found where the city should be, they are still located in the redistricting of the territory inhabited by the Incas, and it will be extremely interesting to learn more about them.

Nevertheless, one should not jump to conclusions. Paititi is the first thing that comes to mind when people discover something like this, and the jungle hides a lot of ruins.
